Understanding Disenfranchised Grief: A Guide for Parents During Back-to-School Season
The back-to-school season can be a time filled with excitement and anticipation for many families. However, for parents who have experienced the loss of a baby, this time can also bring a profound sense of grief and longing for the hopes and dreams they had for their child. This type of grief is often referred to as disenfranchised grief, where the loss is not openly acknowledged or validated by society.
What is Disenfranchised Grief?
Disenfranchised grief occurs when an individual's loss is not recognized or supported by the broader community. In the case of parents who have lost a baby, their grief may be minimized or overlooked, leading to feelings of isolation and confusion. This can be particularly challenging during milestones such as the back-to-school season, when the absence of their child is felt even more acutely.
